Getting to know... different nationalities

We all have our little quirks! It's just that they differ from country to country. Yet a good understanding of these may help you to make the most of your trip by giving you an insight into the minds of the locals. That is the purpose of this unique and satirical series.

Do YOU have the insight to write one of these articles?

Check-out the Italians article. Can you contribute real insight like this — and with similar humour? If so, why not submit a 1,200 - 1,800 word article in the same format. It should comprise single paragraphs with appropriate sub-headings. Ideally it should also include a picture to sum-up the nationals. If you cannot provide this yourself then just recommend one from the iStockphoto website that we could use. Please also include a head-and-shoulders picture of yourself.

At present, articles accepted for this section are being fast-tracked. All published articles are part of our FreeStyle competition. For further details visit the Contributors page.

We are particularly looking for informed articles on Americans, Spanish and French. Can you help?

False Memory
Dean Koontz
It's a fear more paralyzing than falling. More terrifying than absolute darkness. More horrifying than anything you can imagine. It's the one fear you cannot escape, no matter where you hide. It's the fear of yourself. It's real. It can happen to you. And facing it can be deadly.

Will in the World: How Shakespeare Became Shakespeare
Stephen Greenblatt
A young man without wealth, connections, or university education moves to London. In a remarkably short time he becomes the greatest playwright not just of his age but of all time. He recklessly mingles vulgar clowning and philosophical subtlety. How is such an achievement to be explained?

A Writer's World: Travels 1950-2000
Jan Morris
Some of the author's finest articles are brought together here. Age might now restrict her travels, but her memories of travel are a delight. Her wonderful descriptions evoke the spirit of so many places. For example, Delhi is: the capital of the losing streak, the metropolis of the crossed wire, the missing appointment, the puncture, the wrong number.

Himalaya
Michael Palin
In this his most challenging journey, Michael Palin tackles the Himalaya, the greatest mountain range on earth, a virtually unbroken wall of rock stretching 1800 miles from the borders of Afghanistan to south-west China. High comedy indeed!
